CHAPTER EIGHT

‘NIGHTCAP?’

Lukas moved over the sideboard and picked up a bottle of brandy.

‘Um...yes, why not?’

Calista accepted the glass from him and, taking a sip, felt the comforting burn slide down her throat.

They had returned from an evening meal at a small family-run restaurant, hidden in one of the many cobbled backstreets of this beautiful city. Sitting outside, sharing a table so small that their knees had touched and Lukas had been forced to stretch his long legs out to the side, she had felt blissfully relaxed after the drama of Mr Petrides’s office.

The food had been delicious too and, combined with the warm night air, filled with the scent of jasmine and orange blossom, and the indigo sky dotted with stars overhead, she had found herself forgetting her problems for a while and just enjoying Lukas’s company. Which was easy when he was being like this: charming, attentive, funny. The old Lukas. Neither of them had even mentioned the hateful scene earlier on—Mr Petrides’s confession and the shocking behaviour of her brothers.

Now, however, Calista suspected that was about to change. Swilling the brandy around in her glass she looked about her, trying to delay the inevitable. ‘Your apartment is beautiful.’

‘Thank you.’ Lukas came and stood by her side. ‘Though I could do without the note of surprise.’

‘Sorry!’ Calista laughed. ‘It’s just not how I imagined it.’

‘Dare I ask how that was?’

‘No, probably best not to.’

‘Let me guess—all black leather sofas and widescreen televisions?’

‘Something like that.’

‘And maybe a waterbed with satin sheets? A drawer full of sex toys.’

Calista felt herself flush. Could he read her mind? Or was she just guilty of dreadful stereotyping?

‘You mean I’ve got that wrong too?’ She tried to bat back a flippant quip to cover her embarrassment.

‘Play your cards right and later on you might find out.’

Calista swallowed. She had walked right into that one.

She moved away from him into the centre of the open-plan room. ‘I love all the artwork. Is that an original?’ She pointed to a colourful portrait on the wall.

‘It is indeed. Modern art is an interest of mine. It’s a good investment too. But nothing in my collection really compares to this.’ He pressed a switch and the curtains swished to one side and a wall of windows appeared. ‘There. What do you think?’

Calista gasped. Before them twinkled the lights of the city of Athens, and in the distance, high above the city, was the Acropolis, glowing proudly against the night sky. ‘That’s incredible!’

‘Even better from out here.’ Crossing the room, Lukas took hold of her hand and, opening the glass doors, ushered her out onto the balcony. ‘Quite something, isn’t it?’

It certainly was. It was magical. Tipping back her head, Calista let the soft night wrap itself around her, drinking in the majesty of the scene. It put life into perspective somehow, thinking about the thousands of years the ancient citadel had been standing there, watching over them, about generations of people gazing up at it, just as she did now, caught up in their own totally absorbing but all too fleeting worlds.
